NANCY A. APPRILL

Ceramics and Painting

I have had an interest in art from childhood and later received my Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Art from Central Missouri State. Later after moving to New Mexico I would continue my art part time during my teaching career in Special Education.  Now I am devoting all my time to my art career.  I have two studios: one for pottery and one for painting.  I enjoy creating original designs and making many of my glazes in pottery and I enjoy painting with watercolors and acrylics and oils.  My paintings and ceramics can be found on the Copper Heron website through Facebook.  My work is under Photos

CONNIE HARE

Ceramics

My interest in pottery began in my home state of Oregon as a college student.  No matter where I lived, I always found somewhere to continue making pottery on a wheel. Except for the summer spent herding sheep in the BigHorn Mountains in Wyoming while living in a sheep wagon!

In the 90’s, after moving to New Mexico, I studied under Don Ellis, instructor and accomplished artist.

I started my own business, selling my work at shows and galleries in New Mexico and Arizona.

After my kids were out of the house I finished college and started working as an elementary teacher so pottery was no longer a business for me.

Since retirement in 2016 I have gotten back to pottery. I have a studio in La Luz and have been taking classes taught by Alan Miner since 2016.

I make both functional and decorative pottery. My decorative pieces are achieved through a smoke firing process using a combination of materials to achieve color and design.

I also have pottery for sale at Copper Heron Gallery in Alamogordo.  To view it online go to Copper Heron Gallery on Face book; click on photos; click on a pottery picture and view my album.

LAURIE BAKER

Ceramicist

Laurie is a retired RN and a published digital artist living in Alamogordo with her husband. Together they have lived in many European countries with the U.S. Air Force and she lived in Central and South America as a child. Her artistic perspective has been shaped by living with and learning from many diverse cultures throughout her life. She has been making pots and "playing in mud" for about 5 years.  Learning from Alan Miner at ENMU has given her pottery the polished look she strives for. Traditional glazes and styles are what she creates, whether pots, candlesticks, ring holders, pine needle woven pots or vases, her pottery shows true artistic talent in this her new art form.

MARY LOU ESTES

Ceramicists

Ruidoso resident since 1977,  Mary Lou Estes began pottery work in High School many years ago.  Due to a long career in medicine and raising a family, was unable to return to it until full retirement 4 years ago.  Has been taking classes at ENMU with Alan Miner, and has a small home studio now, but has much to learn yet.  Creating both hand building and wheel thrown items, finds that working with mud is something she always wanted to return to, and now she had pretty glazes to cover it up with.  Many locals find and follow her on Facebook (Mary Lou Moore-Estes) and Instagram (nurseloo).

MARGARET "PEGGY" ALFORD

Ceramacist

Peggy is possibly the oldest student taking classes at ENMU. Born in 1921, she turns 100 this coming January. She started taking art classes under Bruce DeFoor in 2012 at the Annex. She took tile making under Miranda Howell and then Sculpture and Ceramics under Alan Minor. She dearly misses the Community Development ceramics classes, and eagerly awaits the college reopening.

KAREN KIMMELL

Ceramicist

Born, raised and educated in Kansas and New Mexico, she doesn’t shy away from the term, “Book Worm”.  She chose teaching originally because of her genuine love of children, but always leaned toward to developing the love of reading and life-long learning. While teaching in Ft. Sumner, she took on overseeing the school library, which further led to taking coursework in Library Science and Administration. On her retirement, she applied for and was named Librarian of The Mescalero Apache Schools.
Her quest for knowledge and adventure is like the horizon- always expanding. From skydiving to world travel, there is no limit to what she will pursue. She stumbled upon her latest adventure after living here a couple of years— to throw pottery on a wheel! Thanks to Alan Miner, ENMU Ruidoso and Gazebo Potters, she has been able to put a check by another item on her bucket list.

SUSAN TRAVIS

Painter - oil

Susan Travis grew up  in the mountains of New Mexico amid a rich artistic culture and heritage.  Her father’s gallery and her mother’s high school art classes provided ample opportunity to meet artists and to see the world through an artistic perspective.

Her grandparents, Kathryne Hail Travis and Olin Herman Travis founded the original Dallas Art Institute in 1924, and the genre of Texas Regionalism emerged under the tutelage of the institute.  Later, Kathryne would operate the Kathryne Hail Travis School of Art in Ruidoso during the 60s.

Susan began painting in 2017.  Her paintings integrate this rich heritage with her training in mythology and psychology, interweaving elements of whimsy and religious narrative. After years of travel, she again lives in the mountains of New Mexico where she teaches university classes, writes, and paints from her home.

PATSY BLASDELL

Expressionist

Patsy Blasdell is an optimist who always believes the glass is half full! She loves to have fun and stretch her abilities as a painter and encourages others to do the same while teaching students during private classes and workshops.

Thoughtful planning the design and composition of each painting with strong light and dark passages is a trademark of Patsy’s work whether she’s painting in watercolr, pastel, oil or acrylic. She makes her artistic statement with expressionistic use of color based on her emotional reaction to the subject, such as a blue cat with orange eyes or a bright purple sunset! In her intuitive world skies are seldom just blue.

Patsy is a Signature Member of New Mexico Watercolor Society in Las Cruces, an Associate member of

National Watercolor Society in California, and an elected Associate Member of  Pastel Society of America

In New York City.  Gallery representation includes Josie’s Framery and Gallery in Ruidoso and Lundeen Art Gallery in Las Cruces.

MARILYN WARD

Creative Synergy

Marilyn Ward is a native New Mexican and has lived in Lincoln County more than 40 years. "This is my home."
She began painting in Denver when she and husband Wayne became parents for the first time. Betsy Bradley taught oils using washes to make landscapes, portraits, and still life resemble photographs. Since then Marilyn has taken classes from many and continues to learn different techniques and mediums. Plein air is a new fascination.

SALLY WIMBERLY

Plein aire painter in Ruidoso

Turquoise and cobalt next to orange; red next to greens...colors is my inspiration!
Whether I'm laying down one juicy brushstroke after another in acrylics or watercolors or spreading buttery pastels on sanded paper, I love every hue and shade.
Painting from my own photographs or in plein aire, my favorite subject is the one I am working on at that very moment. Landscapes, barns, churches, flowers or animals, my creative instinct then chooses which medium works best for each painting - sometimes combining mediums for unusual effects.
